Malcolm has worked with many different organisations and musicians covering classical, contemporary and jazz music.

His classical scores have been performed by, among others, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Quartet, Quartz, The Scottish Ensemble, Mr McFalls Chamber, the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble and the Dunedin Consort.

His concert works have been heard in the USA, Mexico and Russia, with more than 75 performances.The Lighthouse Suite, originally commissioned for the 1999 Royal opening of Glasgow's Lighthouse Building, (originally designed by Charles Rennie Macintosh) is regularly featured on BBC 2.

In 2005 Malcolm completed work on a 12 part radio series A Map of British Poetry, written by the Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, for BBC Radio 4.

His collaborative work includes performance projects with visual artists, choreographers, theatre groups and writers. These include music for Vanishing Point Theatre Company's highly acclaimed productions, music for the Colorado based Hannah Karn Dance Company, and Winter Room for Tabula Rasa Dance Company.

Pop’ music includes; co-writing the new Willard Grant Conspiracy album due out late 2007, string and vocal arrangements for the Delgados' album Hate and producing the (UK) Dog House Roses album also due for release 2007.

Other activities for 2007 include the release of two new classical CDs, one for  string quartet the other for solo piano, the re-release of Solitary Citizen (music for string quartet) and the release of Malcolm’s first jazz collection (in 2001 he was recognised by Sennheiser with the award ‘Best Unsigned UK Jazz Artist’). Malcolm is a highly regarded guitar player and played in a number of Scottish bands before forming Deacon Blue with Ricky Ross in 1984. He went on to form The Moors with Stuart Duffin and Carol Moore in 1988 and their collaboration lasted until 1996 when he began to concentrate on classical music.
